What Is The Process For Multiple Years Catch Up On Bookkeeping?

To catch up on end of year tax prep there are many important things you need to get started :

  1. Bookkeeping goals and overall objective of what you would like to accomplish.

Example : I need to set up a system or cleanup current so that I can receive profit and loss or cash flow reports.

  2. Bank Statements and Credit Card Statements.

  3. List of Employees and/or 1099 Contractors (Any 1099 E-filing Paperwork)

  4. Tracking of Owner Investments and Disbursements. Partnership agreements if applicable.

  5. Pull any cash receipts, expenses paid on personal accounts by mistake or reimbursement receipts.

  6. Any loans or asset payments that will show up on bank statements to be reconciled and added to balance sheet.

  7. VERY IMPORTANT : Accounting for any deposits that are not income! You do not want to pay taxes on non taxable income! Many deposit capital, personal money to cover expenses and loans received right along side taxable income.

  8. Blind spots :

Checks without images on bank statement or non legible payee information, no bank memo showing what it is for.

Money moved around through checks or cash deposits. Transfers are always the best way to move money around as it will show it came directly from owner account into the business. If you deposit cash or check, it is difficult to track or find.

  9. Payroll or Merchant Reports if needed for breakdown classifications.

  10. Any other assets or income such as commissions, investments, rental properties where the money flows through the business accounts.
